CHAPTER 12

There was no way out. Grandma was coming to see the play. Even worse—since Hazel had to work the show—her grandma needed a chaperone. And as luck would have it, she had a volunteer.

It was Matt Thatcher.

Of course it was.

Somehow, despite his graveyard work schedule, he was able to accompany Grandma Lois to the theater on a Saturday evening. Because Hazel needed one more thing to freak out about.

She’d tried to sabotage things. She told her grandma that the show was sold out, but Grandma Lois called the box office herself and secured the wheelchair spots for her and her helper Saturday evening. She’d teased Hazel about not knowing the ins and outs of her own theater when her grandmother had been able to get the closest seats in the house.

The closest seats in the house.

Hazel tried all kinds of lies: there was a mysterious sickness going through the cast and Hazel didn’t want Grandma to get it, the good actors might all have understudies replacing them so the show would be better a different day, she’d heard that the wheelchair seats on the front row were too close and were known to give people headaches from neck strain.

She’d also voiced concern about Grandma’s health. It would be a late night for her, and maybe she’d rather not go to the theater after all.

None of it mattered. Grandma was undeterred.

This was not a part of Plan A, or any other plan further down the alphabet. Hazel never would have hired actors from the theater if she knew her grandma was going to see the show.

She couldn’t ask Stuart and Zach not to perform—they didn’t have understudies. People with small parts were the understudies. Their paychecks and reputations would be affected if they missed a show.

She couldn’t blindfold Matt and her grandma.

What in the world could she do?

Hazel had barely slept all night, and she’d been a mess for the Saturday matinee. Her eye had twitched like crazy for hours, and she’d been late calling a couple cues. The show had survived, but she was not on top of her game.

She’d moved like an anxious zombie all day—until it was time to prepare for the Saturday evening performance. By then she had formulated the semblance of a plan, and she was doing her level best to carry it out.

She’d recruited Talia, who was sympathetic to her plight. Her job was to make Zach and especially Stuart look as different from themselves as possible. Hazel was beyond relieved that the director didn’t go to every show after it was up and running, because if Holloway saw these two, he might have questions. Zach’s red hair was covered by a black wig. His makeup screamed dirty street urchin because fake grime did a good job of masking his features.

Stuart, on the other hand, got a full makeover. Talia gave him a prosthetic nose and chin, as well as a bald cap. His eyebrows were drawn on differently, and his instructions were to speak in a generally lower pitch than his natural voice.
